The standard Cauchy initial value problem for second order differential equation is to construct a solution function in a neighborhood of space and time form values of the function and its time derivative on a selected initial value surface. On the characteristic surfaces the time derivative of the solution function may be discontinuous, so the standard Cauchy construction breaks down. For the Klein-Gordon equation the characteristic surfaces are null surfaces. An alternative version of the initial data needed differs from that of the standard Cauchy problem, and in the case we discuss here the values of the function on an intersecting pair of null surfaces comprise the necessary initial value data. We also present an expression for the construction of a solution from null surface data; two analogues of the quantum mechanical Hamiltonian operator determine the evolution of the system. Scalar field as an intrinsic time measure in coupled dynamical matter - geometry systems . I . Neutral gravitational collapse

There does not exist a notion of time which could be transferred straightforwardly from classical to quantum gravity. For this reason, a method of time quantification which would be appropriate for gravity quantization is being sought. One of the existing proposals is using the evolving matter as an intrinsic 'clock' while investigating the dynamics of gravitational systems. The objective of ou...

Selfgravitating nonlinear scalar fields

We investigate the Cauchy problem for the Einstein scalar field equations in asymptotically flat spherically symmetric spacetimes, in the standard 1+3 formulation. We prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions for initial data given on a space-like hypersurface in the Sobolev H1∩H1,4 space. Solutions exist globally if a central (integral) singularity does not form and/or outside an o...

Cauchy-characteristic evolution of Einstein-Klein-Gordon systems.

A Cauchy-characteristic initial value problem for the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system with spherical symmetry is presented. Initial data are specified on the union of a spacelike and null hypersurface. The development of the data is obtained with the combination of a constrained Cauchy evolution in the interior domain and a characteristic evolution in the exterior, asymptotically flat region. The ...

On Lagrangian and vortex-surface fields for flows with Taylor–Green and Kida–Pelz initial conditions

For a strictly inviscid barotropic flow with conservative body forces, the Helmholtz vorticity theorem shows that material or Lagrangian surfaces which are vortex surfaces at time t =0 remain so for t > 0. In this study, a systematic methodology is developed for constructing smooth scalar fields φ(x, y, z, t =0) for Taylor–Green and Kida– Pelz velocity fields, which, at t =0, satisfy ω · ∇φ=0. ...

On an Abstract Evolution Equation with a Spectral Operator of Scalar Type

It is shown that the weak solutions of the evolution equation y′(t)=Ay(t), t ∈ [0,T ) (0< T ≤∞), where A is a spectral operator of scalar type in a complex Banach space X, defined by Ball (1977), are given by the formula y(t) = etAf , t ∈ [0,T ), with the exponentials understood in the sense of the operational calculus for such operators and the set of the initial values, f ’s, being ⋂ 0≤t<T D(...
